AR was not in the forces because of his very poor eyesight and other maladies. However, Captain Flint does not seem to have any disabling illness or other problems which would preclude him serving in the army or navy. He doesn't seem to have any profession that would put him in a reserved occupation.
Of course he could have been prospecting somewhere in an inaccessible part of the world and only emerged after four years in the wilderness to find that the world had fought a war while he was out of communication. After all Shackleton spent 1914-17 on the Antarctic ice pack.
