In the 60's we still had coal fires for heating. The water was heated by a coke fired 'Raeburn' stove, (Which had replaced an old Cornish Range.) The coke was used as cleaning soot of the flues going around the water boiler would have been a nightmare. So a coal bunker was built with a division for the two types of fuel. It all seems archaic now.
