I don't understand why Peter thinks that configuration is "impossible".

I was looking at them in conjunction with the internal plans as suggested. Unless none of the principal rooms were heated, they're impossible. The chimneys would have been somewhere around the middle of the peak of the pitched roof- rather as they are in Lanehead, for example, or pretty well any detached house. It's a function of the way that chimney breasts and fireplaces need to be supported (they're extremely heavy) and the way flues are conveyed through the brick, generally along or even inside an inner wall for support and space saving. Of course that doesn't apply to terraced or semi-detached houses, but that's not the case for Beckfoot.
