Oh, I think you're quite right, Ed. In fact the top of the window is considerably higher than the top of the door, and I suspect the beams whose stubby remainders are still visible at the door end might have originally supported a mezzanine floor extending towards the window. Such a floor would have made it easy for the Ds to sleep on of course, and so have provided considerably less romance than their having to do battle with hammocks.

Actually though, similar beam-ends exist at the other end, above the fireplace, as well, and while the obvious suggestion is that they once supported a mantelpiece, I suspect myself that the mezzanine floor might have been a later addition that extended the full length of the hut, right across the window, to give the local farmer additional storage. (And if it were really only a mantelpiece at that end, why would you bother to saw off 6" of it?)

Also, the collar ties being part of the roof structure are steel straps as far as I can tell, and could not possibly support Dick's spectacles lying on them, even if a hammock could have been suspended from them.

So it's pretty clear that what we see with our eyes is different to what we see using AR's imagination. As with Beckfoot, I just find it interesting to speculate.
