I don't think that it's the 'happy' we need to be worrying about, but the 'patronizing.' I think we've all read books where authors are writing down to children, and that is what really shows.

In the US, Paolo Bacigalupi, is known for writing environmental science fiction, with his adult work showing a pretty well doomed society. In his young adult fiction, he shows dystopian worlds with some hope, and his first middle-grade novel, Zombie Baseball Beatdown, is downright cheerful in tone.
