Noted that one of the rods was from A W Gamage in High Holborn.
Gamages was just across the road from Shervington's - perhaps the premier pipe tobacco shop in London. Perhaps AR bought Auld Kendal tobacco there to remind him of the lakes.
One suspects a trip to High Holborn would have encompassed both establishments, then perhaps a lunch and a drink in one of the booths at the Cittie of Yorke (formerly Hennekys Long Bar) public house further down the road.
Sadly Gamages closed in 1972 and Shevingtons (fornmerly Brumfits) in 2010.
