It must be an illusions; the boom definitely has jaws. Plenty of photos on www.sailransome.org/photos showing the various bits.
We had a new mast made, though the old one was usable for a while. The yard and boom are original. I guess the light shines differently in each photo and makes them look different.
Yes, the 1974 sail did survive. We had the new one made a bit bigger to match the size/weight of the hull a bit better. Steve Goacher in Windermere gave us some advice on that matter.
