Another point might be the reason behind the changes; perhaps not so much the explicit reason as the consistency. In the case of LotR the only way to make a movie out of it was to select one theme, which was the action adventure. Lost Tom Bombadil and almost all of the poems, stories, songs. But any attempt to really keep them would have made a dreadful movie.

The Hobbit seems to amount to infill along with the action adventure theme which I think Jackson was pretty much pinned to after LotR. But from what we've heard of the S&A film the changes/additions don't seem to be from a furthering the story perspective necessarily or consistently, so they sound more piecemeal and less coherent.
