A film adaptation of a book has two potential audiences: those who have read it (and presumably enjoyed it) and those who haven't. The former will be looking for something which closely follows it and, if anything, enhances it (Emma Thompson's screenplay for Sense and Sensibility springs to mind); the latter will be looking for an enjoyable film which succeeds on its own merits. The film makers have to try to reconcile these things, or boldly go for one or the other, possibly depending on which they judge will be more lucrative.
It sounds as if the film makers of the new SA have made their choice, which may not satisfy readers like the child who sat behind a friend of mine at a screening of the 1974 SA, and at one point whispered "They're on page 64."
