"Tide Mill" and "tide mill pool", now that is interesting. The concept is presumably quite straightforward (?) The tide flows in filling up the pool and the miller make use of the current of the in-flow; then as the tide ebbs the water rushes out again and the current of the out-flow is used.

Is this indeed the situation? I know that in more recent times there have been schemes to harness energy from tides and that these have had varying degrees of success (and failure) but I hadn't realized that in earlier times some success had been achieved.

Were such mills common in the UK? Obviously a large high tide/low tide difference is necessary; where else might such mills have been found?
