I note that no one is taking up Ed’s ‘nakedness’ point. I am not qualified to pronounce on the question of taboos on nudity in the 1920s and 1930s, but coming back to SA, I think that John’s naked row across to the mainland was no Big Deal. It was before the others were awake – this would probably be around 6.00 a.m., maybe 6.30. The lake would have been totally deserted at that time. In late July, it is broad daylight in the UK at 6.00. John had his clothes with him, so if he had spotted another boat on the lake coming towards him (and he would have first seen it from a long way off), it would have been easy to put his clothes on. He did this anyway as soon as he landed. In the unlikely event of there being a watcher on the shore, the gunwale would have hidden John’s, ahem, midriff. I see no problem, and I don’t think Ed should be too perturbed about this episode.
