John swims round the island and then rows to the mainland in SA. I think I had presumed that he changed into his clothes after the swim, but looking at the sequence of events Ed details, I suppose that he did row naked to the mainland. They do get changed on the beach after the shipwreck in SD, but when camping on an island there are not the usual places for changing, toileting etc! On Tarboard a while ago it was said that Americans unlike Britons (Britishers?) were reluctant to change behind a towel for bathing when there were no changing sheds around.

On the deck of the Wild Cat in PD they must be naked after they fling their pyjamas down the hatch for a morning rinse in salt water, but this seems to be a “boys only” wash. And young Bill is intrigued by the striped clothes they all wear at night. Bill was used to sleeping in a sail locker in his clothes on the Viper; no pajamas for him! Being a ship’s boy on the Viper was tougher than being a ship’s boy on whatever ship youngish (but post-Oxford?) Jim Turner sailed on. He tells Roger in SD that it’s a hard life being a ship’s boy

In PM the doctor remarks on Nancy in “bathers” looking like a half-naked savage. They wear “bathers” (togs?) often in SD & SW also, and AR describes Nancy as “wet and piebald” when she arrives at night at the Dog’s Home with Timothy’s message. Piebald is a term usually used to describe horses!

Titty contemplates becoming a savage (SA or SD?), but decides that squatting down on your hunkers and eating raw meat is not that appealing so settles for being an explorer.
