The various armies have been doing just this for a number of decades, perhaps a couple of centuries or more. They use a bugle, which with practice, can be made to sound various diferent notes so that each "tune" signifies a different message. Bugles are readily available from Military Disposals shops. The sound carries well, although on reflection if you sound the call "Come to the cookhouse door" you may be inundated by old soldiers from two suburbs away!
