My mother used to fire the 30 30 into the air from the back porch. One shot served as a dinner/general call, two meant hurry up, and three was the signal for when someone was in real trouble. However, that was in rural Alberta and probably would be frowned on if tried in today's urban settings.
I still have my official Canada Boy Scout whistle, c.1948. It appears to be chrome plated brass, and was made in England. I wouldn't be surprised if it isn't very much like Susan's.
