Sorry Ed, but I CAN'T go along with the theory that the kitchen is not part of the main house. This isn't the sub-tropics, it is the English Lake District, wet most of the time and cold and bleak for about eight months of the year. Lake District kitchens are ALWAYS at the heart of the house, in this case probably in the smaller north western section but still close to the principal rooms. Nobody would EVER take the food outside on the way between the kitchen and the dining room.
