Prue-
Thanks for your obserservations.

Did you remember your SAATWAR story had the wedding picture
on the mantle in the PARLOUR? At least it was there, the
last time I was looking in that room...

The kitchen IS like an ADD-ON at the rear of the house.

The passageway concept is a bit undefined. In one place, Cook crosses the passage way on the way to the pantry. Now just where that pantry is, is not terribly obvious.

-------------------
"Where is it?" cried Nancy.
"In the passage," said Roger.
As they went in, the noise was almost deafening. There,
above their heads the bell was whirring, the big tea-tray
throbbing like a sounding-board. In the passage was a pile of
broken plates.
"Lucky it wasn't the best service," said cook. "A noise like
that, and me just crossing to the pantry..."

In PM, as the D's are looking through the woods at Joly's men gathering
at the front of Beckfoot, preparing for their hunt for the G.A. you
can see to the left of the house an outbuilding, which I think is
the garage, tools shed, pigeon loft, stable combination. But it is
not obvious just what the function of that outbuilding is, but you
can see that to access it, it is just across the yard from the
passageway, assuming that is between the kitchen and the main house.

As for the passageway being a bit drafty during the winter, I believe
this is all a part of the fact that the kitchen is not really a part
of the main house, but a building that is separate from it, so to get
from the kitchen to the main house involves going through the "outside."

I am very bummed out as to how that "artwork" turned out, really a mess
that almost makes no sense. I keep forgetting that the "proportional
print" business adjusts line lengths. I was hoping column 40 would
stay in the col 40 position, which is required if making a "drawing"
out of characters, not graphics. Having put quite a bit of effort into
these conclusions, only to have it so badly scrambled upon presentation, just takes the starch out of the whole idea. Oh well, I tried. Hope you guys can make a bit of sense about it all.

The main idea is both floors have a hall down the middle, with three
rooms on each side. At least, that is the way I see it, or should I
say, as I imagine it. But then, we are dealing with an imaginary place
anyway, that existed only in the mind of the author, so let us enjoy
the flights of fancy here...

It has been fun to dig this stuff out.

Thank you, AR, for providing so much pleasure and delight of digging
through the images in your mind.
