The identity of the locomotive whose smokebox is shown in Chapter 1 of PP has been discussed before on Tarboard. David Carter (in says that the drawing most nearly depicts an ex-LNWR 4-4-2 tank engine, of which a number were shedded at Oxenholme ('Strickland Junction'). I have always thought it was an attempt at the front end of a brand new parallel-boiler 'Royal Scot' class, before they were fitted with smoke deflectors, but in real life a loco of that size would not have taken the train up the Windermere branch. As Titty and Roger do not appear to change trains, there is a problem here, but I suggest that if David is right about the loco, it could be a tank engine taking the Windermere portion of the 'Lakes Express'. This whole problem is discussed at length in David's book.

By the way, the drawing in PP is the wrong way round - the train would have been heading south or, alternatively, there are fells shown where there aren't any!
