Quoted references to "Roman":

Coot Club - Ch 1

Just then they could very well be spared, as their
father had to go to a conference of archaeologists upon the
Roman wall and, of course, wanted their mother to go with
him.

Coot Club - Ch 10

In the afternoon, when the rain was at its worst, Port and
starboard, in oilskins and sou'westers, came rowing into the
Broad, bringing letters from the post office at Horning. Dick
and Dorothea had a letter apiece that had been written up on
the Roman wall and had a Carlisle postmark. Mrs. Barrable
had a letter from her brother in London, horrified scraps of
which she read aloud.

Coot Club - Ch 20

There were still mudflats away to the left and behind them,
on a lump of rising ground, Mrs. Barrable pointed out the
ancient remains of the Roman fort of Burgh.

SA and WH

Several references to the shooting of a ROMAN candle from the rooftop
of the houseboat, but that is totally devoid of any association
with the doings of Caesar, more related to pirates.

References to "Hadrian":

(none - looked through all 12 books)

Hope this helps to answer certain questions regarding Dick's
father.
