In SA, the Amazons say that they were taught to sail by Uncle Jim, who then gave them Amazon.

We see the sailing scenes through John's eyes, much more than through the eyes of the others, so we are privy to his internal debates about what to do and how to do it. Furthermore, whilst the Amazons have only sailed on the lake, John knows there is a whole world of nautical correctness beyond the lake - he was taught to sail by his Daddy in Falmouth roads, full of sailing craft of all kinds - quay punts, oyster boats, large and small yachts, maybe even an Ericson square rigger anchoring in the roads "for orders". He knows what it is to pick up a mooring and handle a dinghy in in front of a critical audience in the Yacht Club or on the quay!

He is the eldest boy, and must not let the side down. His standard for sailing correctness is that of his admired father, who is, after all, a professional seaman. For Nancy, sailing is fun; for John it is a serious business; he is learning to become a seaman.

I learned to sail under the eye of an expert father so I identify strongly with John; coming alongside, I always lay my oars in the boat blades forward, to avoid wetting the passenger, something I am sure John would have been told too!
