when visiting the area in 2000, I saw a lot of buildings and walls built ingeniously in slate. The slates were laid with their primary cleavage horizontally, and there seemed to be a secondary, weaker, cleavage which was used very effectively to provide a relatively smooth wall surface. Obviously, a lot of buildings have been rendered over that and painted white.
