AR is showing the problem with Roger's comment on not people not agreeing on the angle, I agree on that one example AR is being a bit extreme but the problem is very real.

I do see what you mean; it's inherent in using a system that splits the compass into 30 or so divisions rather than 360, but even as a child of eight I simply couldn't understand why he used a measurement system that I already knew wasn't used by real surveyors.

By the time I was using a protractor, in a very simple way, I never even tried to understand his descriptions of bearings which struck me as being hopelessly complicated. When that bit came up I remember thinking 'why don't they use degrees?' and passing on, uncomprehending.
