Returning briefly to the subject of coffee, I have a question. When I was in England a couple of weeks ago, I found it impossible to get a cup of coffee with cream, instead of milk. I asked for cream, but the best they could come up with was a squirt of whipped cream on the top. What should I ask for to get coffee with normal cream instead of milk? I was at a loss to describe what cream was: you know, that thickish stuff that floats to the top of a bottle of unhomogenized milk. Put that in your coffee instead of milky and the thin bitter fluid instantly becomes rich, palatable and delicious.

While I'm on the subject of drink, why have the English apparently taken to Budweiser beer? Bud is one of the least drinkable of American beers, being the usual thin, icy, gassy, chemical swill. That England, the home of rich, full-bodied beers and ales, should actually encourage the sale and consumption of any American beer, let alone Budweiser, is astonishing. My friends and I, living on the Pacific coast of Canada, never drink American or Canadian beer such as Labatts or Carlings. We prefer the products of small local breweries which are NOT concocted chemically, but are brewed slowly and maternally by brewmasters who love their work and appreciate the fine blending of hops, malted barley, yeast and soft water to produce a delicious beverage that quenches the thirst, delights the eye, soothes the palate and relaxes the nerves.
