It was the young man who was held on the mainland. Hannay didn't release him he convinced him to go back into captivity till he could release the others.
On the subject of intolerance and Buchan: It is interesting that Bucan has been labelled as anti semitic. His name is inscribed in the Golden Book of the Jewish National Fund of Israel for his work on behalf of Jews. He chaired the Parliamentary Palestine Committee where he denounced "the centuries of cruelty and wrong which have stained the record of nearly every Gentile people." Also when the Nazis published their hit list of British figures who would be arrested after a Nazi victory, Buchan was singled out for his "pro-Jewish activity."
