Interesting - I never considered the characters as having any sort of accent - they just 'were'. Maybe I imbued the adults such as the Billies and Cook with an unconscious accent but only because I'd heard 'English' accents on radio shows.
Funnily enough, when I and my husband toured around the UK two years ago we weren't aware of accents at all, no more than we have in NZ. However, I do notice that my daughter who lives & works in London has two voices - one is her normal kiwi voice but on occasion when she's answered the phone not knowing who it is on the line she speaks in her 'posh English' accent, the one she uses in her job.
