Plus John and Nancy would be at the age where they could have signed on with the Navy or whatever. By 1940 they would have been at least 20?

Way past the age of interest in these stories that AR was writing.

But GN? never felt the same to me as the others, it was just different.

I must say reading the Coots in the North was more like the Ransome of old, but one wonders what adventure he would have dreamed up if he had kept at it. I think if I read it correctly Hugh Brogan seems to think he just grew tired of the story telling?

Not sure about that.
