I'm not sure that he got tired of the story-telling as just got tired. Also having indifferent health would have made it difficult to maintain his interest in the project. Certainly everyone who lived through the war in Europe would have looked back fondly to the years before the war began, and it would be natural to set an innocent children's adventure in those years.
