Marmite, Vegemite, Promite

Nice story, David. Good comment at the end, too. I have an American lady friend to whom the description (only) of Vegemite provoked the response "Eeewwwww!" (I wouldn't dare to call her an imbecile, of course....)

I don't know if Marmite is still available here in Oz, although along with another product called Promite, it certainly used to be. But Vegemite (which of course is a compulsory staple component of every Aussie kid's diet,) while tasting pretty similar, is not identical in flavour to either.

Interestingly, the salt content of Vegemite has been deliberately reduced, incrementally, by the manufacturers over the last twenty or so years. It's still pretty high though, the figure presently standing at a little over 0.03% by weight.

A good sandwich filling, by the way, is Vegemite with chopped almonds.

But peanut butter? Eeewwwww!
