Dick asks his father about the Picts in PM, and says the igloo is made from old stones in WH. WH also has the old man who built the “North Pole” lookout many years ago, and the earlier year when the lake froze over. But most historical references are in PP.

Slater Bob talks about the officer who finds the gold and then goes off to the Great War and (presumably) gets killed, though as Captain Flint says at the end of the book there were similar stories about earlier wars like the Boer and Zulu Wars. Slater Bob (Ch 3 p 36) also says “Queen Elizabeth had her Dutchies (mining) here ..” and then (Ch 10 p 116) refers to “the Germans who came to these lake-country fells and mined copper in the time of Queen Elizabeth”. At the end of PP, Colonel Jolys (who had fought in many wars, PM) and his firefighters turn up with a blast of coach horns used by the horse-drawn coaches that were replaced by buses/motor coaches thirty years ago.

Away from the Lakes, Captain Flint reads from Hackylut’s “Voyages” in PD. Plus Peter Duck’s reminiscences of the old clipper ships he was on, like the Thermoplae. And surely the GA is a historical relic!
