Rootrot? Or otherwise a root eating pest. Have a look at the roots when you dig it out. Sad to say, most fruiting perennials don't have a very long life anyway - I suppose they fruit themselves to death. Either take cuttings every two/three years to replace older plants,or buy in replacements. I do the former but if its a new grafted variety, then a good local garden centre is the best bet.
Clearing out the hole and replacing the soil with fresh stuff is also a good idea. That way, if there was a pest there, you are giving the new plant a fighting chance.
