"I know," said John. "It's like fog in the Channel."
"So it is," said Susan. "It's like that day outside Falmouth with daddy."
"When we had such a job to find St. Mawes."
"And the lighthouse was lowing like a cow."
Swallowdale - Fog on the Lake (ch. XXXII), p. 380 in the Godine edition)
Since Swallowdale was (c) 1931, and he convalesced in 1933, was there an earlier Falmouth - St. Mawes connection?
Susan was evidently also sailing with daddy out of Falmouth; do we infer that the trip in question was not on a fishing boat, thus reconciling the above passage with the passage in WDMTGTS that Susan hadn't gone out, like John, in a fishing boat from Falmouth. On the other hand, there are some other inconsistencies in WDMTGTS; can anyone imagine John not knowing about channel marker buoys? In S&A he even knew about leading lights. AR must have been too busy sailing "Nancy Blackett" to do the thorough editing he would have otherwise!
