I also thought that John was taught to sail by his father in Falmouth - see We Didn't Mean to Go to Sea, Chapter IV, Down the River, where Susan takes Goblin's tiller from John. "She had not sailed with Daddy as John had, going out of Falmouth in a fishing boat." I have scanned Swallows and Amazons and Swallowdale quickly and found no reference to St Mawes but I may have missed it.
