"Football" is of course a generic name for a type of sport, of which there are several varieties as Robert points out. For what it's worth, the "default" football here in Oz is "Aussie rules," our own particular brand of the game. Anything else is identified by being referred to as "soccer," "rugby," or "gridiron" (which last we hardly consider to be football at all -- rather just an excuse for blokes to wear shoulder-pads....)
