Interesting comments all. I've only driven around the Lake District and Hadrians Wall. Since my army has taught me to think in kilometers, I'll continue to speak in that, (though I build furniture in Imperial measurements). I can immagine that Toronto is excellent driving compared to London.

In the part of the world I drive in, I plan 1 hour per 100km (60miles) I live on very back country gravel roads that feed onto 2 lane highways (that don't have a stone wall inches from the side) if I drive far enough I can find 4 lane highways (or 12 in Toronto).

Peterborough, where my wife works is 45minutes away. I'm 2 hours to downtown Toronto, 2 hours to Kingston and 3 to Ottawa (though who wants to go there). the only rule is to try and stay somewhere for at least as long as the round trip of driving.

I gather that a combination of heavy traffic and small roads make your average speed much slower. I once drove from Peterborough Ontario to Whitehorse Yukon in 76 hours and that was just half of the country. When the Scot Rail from London to Inverness is about 10 hours,(and a fine memory) I figured you guys would be driving all over your Island.

Ross
