I could not possibly comment on the habits of Cornish ancestors, beyond a sidelong glance at the matter of Sir Clowdesley Shovell's ring, but...

In September 1977 I was in Lerwick taking statements in the case of the salvage of the "Fred Everard" which developed a severe list with a deck cargo of timber from Russia. In the course of all the excitement she lost a lot of deck cargo not far off the entrance to Lerwick sound.

The Shetlands are, notoriously, treeless.

The cargo was fished out by local fishing boats.

The Everards superintendent thought that he should try to get his customers' cargo back, and paid a call on the local Customs officer, who informed him that it "wasna within my jurisdiction!" and he should contact the Receiver of Wreck.

"And who might that be?"

"Aye, well, it's me!"

"And?"

"I'm verra sorry, but it seems to me that its nae flotsam, its nae jetsam and its nae lagan. so its nae within my jurisdiction!"

"Who should I try, then?"

"The Superintendent of Polis, ye'll find him at home just now."

Jumps in hire car, drives 20 miles...

...and is met at the end of the garden by a gentleman building himself a shed out of... you guessed it!
