Aren't we making the mistake of regarding 'children' and 'adults' as two separate species? AR obviously intended to write children's books, but he never talked down to his readership - in fact in a way he addressed them as adults. That is why we can read his books. And it is why I, for example, cannot read Enid Blyton - after a few paragraphs you think 'This is for children!' You never think that with AR. He probably realised that he hadn't changed much since he was a child. I don't think I have, to be honest.
