No, ‘grog’ seems to have been the term for ginger beer. It is first used by Titty in SA Ch XVI:
Then there were three bunloaves and six bottles of ginger beer. ‘Hurrah for the grog,’ said Titty
I think that is the first mention, and I am sure that the word ‘soda’ (referring to a drink) is not used at all by AR. Perhaps, Ed, you could do a search for 'soda' and prove I am right (those words seem strangely familiar somehow).
Lemonade also appears and is referred to as ‘Jamaica rum’. SA Ch X:
Nancy said ‘Let’s broach a puncheon of Jamaica rum. . . .She [our cook] calls it lemonade.’
So rum = lemonade, grog = ginger beer. Whether these terms are used consistently throughout the books, I can’t honestly say. Ed? Fancy the challenge?
