It seems that "GROG" was used to refer symbolically to an assortment of drinkables. Ginger Beer and lemonade were the usual, although once they had to "make do" with hot tea without milk, which they decided would be "hot grog" and thus drank it anyway. The stuff Cook made up for them would be lemonade, but was referred to usually as "grog" although it sometimes was called "rum" as such was considered the proper drink for a pirate. The bottles they bought of "grog" was the Ginger Beer, which Roger noted was just not large enough inside. The usage of "rum" was used to refer to the pirate drink, and for that which was to be limited in its usage "for medicinal purposes only", although it was handy for sharing a toast between Daddy and the Pilot. It seems that as a pirate, Nancy referred to Cook's lemonade as Grog or Rum, with the preference being Grog.

There is the slang usage of "rum", as in, "it was a rum go..."; "its a rum place and rum people".

As for "soda", Tom had to use soda and soap to clean up after the Margoletta had caused him to spill bacon fat onto the Titmouse's bottom boards. Ginty put washing soda and lump sugar on the shopping list for the twins. Slater Bob in telling the tale about finding gold in the Fells said "new aluminy come in that soaks away wi' a drop o' soda and makes food taste funny to me." Jim Brading used washing soda in the sink to help wash the dishes. There is no indication that "soda" was used to refer to anything that was to be drunk, only as a cleaning chemical.

And that's the way it was...
