How about clarifying it thus -
I was telling my Old Man about climbing the Old Man of Coniston.
& that's before you introduce Old Man bitter ( must get up to Bank ground soon and have a pint or two in the Bull )

Although I understand your point, it is similar to.....

"I had to take my daughter to hospital as she had a ring stuck on her finger; fortunately they were able to cut it off."
( which most people will understand as cutting the ring off, not amputating a digit. )


Also, one of my favourite sentences goes along the lines of....

"He decided that the present was right to present the present."
