Ian's pictures are of the types of kitchens I remember "Back o' Skidda'" in the 50s.

and at Doth's ( my wife's ) great uncles' farm at Thackthwaite ( close by
Ullswater ) in the 60s.

Though by then Geordie and Tommy had bought an electric cooker for their
housekeeper, Mary Head, to use. Mary, however, didn't hold with
electrickery and refused to use it - carrying on using the fire to boil
potatoes, kettles and to fry things and the ovens either side to make
stews and rice puddings. Everything served on the same plate - a slice of
bread between courses to wipe it. Geordie and Tommy used the electric
cooker in her abscence - and the washing machine that she was also scared of.
