My best friend from childhood lived in a home that contained a cast iron range for cooking. I remember it had an fire box on the left and the oven on the right. The lids could be lifted to allow pots and pans to have direct access to the fire.

I also remember that it was the only such stove I saw in urban Australia - growing up in the 60's. In the 70's I saw a huge wooden range in the country in an elderly ladies house. She cooked the best meals I have ever eaten, and she only cooked on that range. She had the biggest stack of firewood in her backyard to fuel the range. I can still taste the lamb, if I close my eyes. She baked lots of different kinds of deserts - she was a great cook.

Thanks for the web site on roving, it is really good and answered a lot of questions I had.
