Robert's 'native' point is a good one, but surely the basic reason the Swallows went daily for milk is that it came straight from the farm and was unpasteurised. The safe 'shelf life' of unpasteurised milk is very short - on a really hot summer's day it can be a matter of hours. Immersion in cool earth or water will prolong this a bit, but certainly not longer than 24 hours.

(I suppose drinking untreated milk is something we have to add to all the things which should have killed the Swallows off, but of course did not. Some nutrition experts advocate the drinking of untreated milk.)
