Two obersavations on turning turtle; about three or four years ago, during the Fastnet Race, a boat lost its keel. As the keel formed a large or the total of its ballast it turned turtle and the skipper was stuck inside the upturned hull. If it had not been for the speed and experience of the rescue team he could have drowned.

Second point; many years ago Pauline Marshall was sailing Mavis on Coniston Water. The exact details are not known but a person with her drowned because Mavis turned over. Whether Mavis capsized or turned turtle I do not know, but the person who drowned was, I believe, a non-swimmer. Sailing for non-sailers is dangerous and should be undertaken with great care.
