I too learnt to sail remembering what I read in S&A plus other readings
I also taught my two children to sail ages 12 and 14.
This was after moving to the US.
and warmer water, although would have done the same thing in the UK if I had had the where-with-all at the time.
None of us ever got really wet so maybe we did not go fast enough.
I have also crewed on larger boats since and a couple of times on racing yachts which I have to say is hard work.
