Edwardians weren't known for their propriety - Edward VII was a bit of a rake. His mother Victoria gave her name to an era of rigid propriety, at least in public.

In the company of their peers, the aristocracy have never been sexually restrained. Even nowadays, they are at it like rabbits. Good examples are Charles and Diana, and their circle. Sexual fidelity is for peasants.

But nowadays the royal family do like to keep up and appearance of bourgeois standards. It's a calculated decision, basically dreamt up as a survival mechanism in an age which has embraced bourgeois values.
