My copy, JC 1948, has a notice inside, on the title page, that says 'Based on information suppplied by the Swallows and Amazons and Illustrated mainly by Themselves'. The capitalisation is as in the original. I don't know what it said on the dust cover, which is long gone.

When I first read it, I must have been about eight years old. I'm sure that I believed every world of it- that is, that the children had drawn the illustrations. It was jolly confusing, as I was vaguely aware that AR had drawn those in SA and Swallowdale. But I just got on with reading the story. At some later date- I have no idea when- I coloured in most of the illustrations. The book itself is now a venerable wreck, battered and wonky but whole.
