The Turner family was well-off. The house Beckfoot was where the young Turners, Molly and Jim were raised by the GA. But in the books there was only one servant at Beckfoot, non-live-in, ie Cook. Plus a maid mentioned in just one book, who was happy to see the back of the GA. A rich family would have had more than one or two servants.

Apart from paying for Jim’s world travel there was his year (or less) at Oxford, which as he was obviously not on a scholarship cannot have been cheap. And the GA’s place at Harrogate. She may have had some say in spending the Turner money, if it was in trust or entailed. I suppose Jim as the son (whether older or younger than Molly) would have had first call on Beckfoot, but as a single world traveller he had less need of a house than Molly, who had two girls to bring up. Jim Turner’s “Mixed Moss” went into six (eight?) editions, so must have been a bestseller.

While Beckfoot was surrounded by woods not farms, it is still possible that the Turner family owned some nearby farms. Or got money from the timber being cut by the woodmen (SD). Or had investments elsewhere.

Molly Blackett may have had some money from Bob (capital or a pension), but not necessarily.

The family (Molly & Jim) could still afford to renovate Beckfoot (PP) and run a car and a (steam?) launch, but were not rich.
