It was only yesterday that Andyb asked about them, but the thread has gone so far in pursuit of other aspects that I'll start a new one.
The TARS Literary Weekend in 2001 had, as one of its speakers, Tessa Duder, a distinguished Kiwi author of children's books. She told us of the first she published, Night race to Kawau, which, after she had worked out the basic plot, proved to have some aspects in common with WDMTGTS. "In fact, though 37 ..... I had very little idea about the works of Mr Ransome at all."
Her best known books are Alex and its three sequels. She mentions other Kiwi books: Silver Island by Edith Howes (1928, and therefore pre-AR); The Cruise of the Crazy Jane and Camping with C by Isabel Maude Peacock (1932-34), and moving to 'a more productive period after the war', The Long Holiday by Barry Mitcalfe, The Freedom of Ariki by Rollo Arnold ('a suggestion of Swallows and Amazons', says one critic). Recent, specifically sailing novels include Fired Up by Sarah Ells and Strange Company by Helen Beaglehole.
Comparatively few in recent years. She attributes this not only to modern attitudes to children and putting them at risk, even fictional, but to the New Zealand landscape. "NZ is an unsettling, unforgiving and untamed country."
