And as a follow-up, I am so glad that AR didn't fall for the classic children's story responses- that either 1) Aunt Maria would find out, be justifiably angry, and put the Picts and Martyrs on bread and water for life, or 2) Aunt Maria finds out, forgives all, and turns out to have a heart of gold. A more traditional writer would have forced a moral ending. Instead AR allowed Maria to be wrong throughout- and sneakiness rather than virtue prevails.
