Oo, I'm not sure about that. (Pam - this is a disagreement - I assume you're OK about it!) I have always felt that at the close of 'Picts and Martyrs' the G.A. shows quite a bit of dignity and 'bottle' - so much so that even her great-niece Nancy can't help admiring her. This is under-stated, and is typically subtle - I certainly agree that a 'heart of gold' ending would have seemed a bit trite. I think that 'Picts' has a brilliant ending, so much so that I sometimes wish that the AR series had ended there. (Well, OK, maybe not . . .)
