The Steven Spurrier I think of first (though he may be Stephen) is the wine merchant. He set up shop in the centre of Paris, near the Madeleine, in the early 1970s, and set the French all agog when he started to run courses on wine - an Englishman!
His shop was very close to the office where I worked in 1972-3, and I used to buy bottles from him.
It wasn't till TARS started in 1990, and I started looking at SA again, that I saw the maps by Steven Spurrier.
I had never heard of the "American footballer" before this week.
